this seems very similar to a wierd case we had in the hospital recently. The horse had alot of muscle twitching and throwing herself to the ground. The owner thought she was neurologic. A myopathy was the first differential. However, after being in the hospital for a few days it was discovered she had a small colon impaction. She went to surgery and has since not shown any of the previous signs. It was a weird presentation, but seems to be a chronic colic.

Are you going to retest her? I think you almost have to in order to rule out HYPP. Then you can completely focus on a correct diagnosis. I had Animal Genetics do my stud's testing. They were cheaper than UC Davis. Plus if you went with them you would have a true second opinion.

I see your point. However, most of her thrashing the day at the show was from her being away from my other mare. As soon as my mare was brought back she acted as though nothing was wrong; aside from the muscle twitching. She usually twitches on her neck or hip. Recently, it's been generalized through her neck, shoulder, underline, and hip. Sometimes she twitches over her back.

I called AQHA AGAIN today and demanded the HYPP results of her dam. Hmmm... there are none. Then I asked for the results of her dam's sire Eyes A Solis... again... per AQHA he has never been tested. However, if you do a Google search for Eyes A Solis, and click on the first link, you can see where he is listed in the AQHA stallion directory as being N/H. AQHA told me our mare was tested and tested negative (as it states on her papers); however, the test was NOT conducted through UC Davis. Hmmmm... They finally submitted to sending me another DNA kit. I'm having her retested. I don't care what anyone from AQHA says. I've watched this mare have multiple attacks recently and I've treated them. The vet and I are in agreement about this. As far as the tying up episode, I think it is somewhat correlational to the attack she exhibited last night. However at this time there are too many questions and not enough answers.

CCH, per AQHA, UC Davis did not test her. She was tested with another lab (they didn't say where; she was getting ready to tell me but then she started asking me more questions). And yes, I am retesting her. I just ordered a DNA kit from AQHA about 30 minutes ago so it should be here by tomorrow or Friday. This is my first step in finding out exactly what's wrong. If the test comes back N/N from UC Davis, we are going to move forward and test her for PSSM.
